March 7, 1997 was just another game for the Whalers. But for Whaler fans, this game would have meaning. Robert Kron scored a picturesque goal on a beautiful pass from Sami Kapanen to stake the Whalers to a 1-0 lead late in the first period.
However, the goal of remembrance was scored by number three Steve Chiasson. Chiasson was playing his first game as a Whaler after a late season trade brought him from Calgary for yet another doomed Whalers playoff run. It was a normal goal from Chiasson, just a blast from the point during a Whale powerplay.
The Whalers ended up winning the game 2-0. Burke was in net for the shutout.
